Back-to-School Books for Grown-ups

For as long as I can remember, September has felt like my new year. January has never given me the same fresh-start feeling that September ushers in. Between my life as a student and my current teacher existence, I've been tuned-in to the academic calendar for 30 years (!).

There are countless kids books about the first day of school, but my all-time favourite is Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. My mum gave it to me when I was - wait for it - starting school, so it has a special place in my heart. I remember turning the pages with excitement, wondering whether kindergarten would be like it was in the storybook school.

Nowadays, I find that books that relate in some way to the post-secondary school world are often some of my favourites. Here are a few of my recommended fiction reads about college/university from both faculty and student perspectives:

The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
On Beauty by Zadie Smith
Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam
The Name of the World by Denis Johnson

And two that are on my to-read list:

The Idiot by Elif Batuman
The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzter

Happy back-to-school, students and teachers (and parents!) ❤
